A RANGE of free and low cost events will be offered across Purbeck next month, as part of the Purbeck Pledge initiative.

Last year the campaign, backed by the NHS, Purbeck District Council (PDC), sports organisations and other charities, focused on encouraging residents to abstain from alcohol for a month.

This time around, residents are being encouraged to get active throughout September.

PDC local communities portfolio holder Cllr Pipe said: "We live in a fantastic part of the country, so the Purbeck Pledge 2016 will make the best use of Purbeck's outstanding natural environment and offer the benefits which come from getting out and getting active.

"Lots of organisations have shown their commitment to the health of local people by supporting this year's pledge and we are extremely grateful to all of them."

A launch event is scheduled for Durlston Castle on Saturday, September 3, from 10am-4pm. There will be a chance to find out more about the events, and to take part is some free activities on the day. All are welcome.

Dr Alastair Ward, from Wareham Surgery, said: "Nature really lifts us up so there will be lots of opportunities to do something physical and get us out there this September."

The free and low cost activities include Tai Chi and Qigong, orienteering, horticulture, coasteering, mindfulness walks, cycling, Nordic Walking, dinghy sailing, Morris Dancing, snorkelling and lots more.

Dr Ward continued: “This is a fantastic way to do something great for our health, so take the Pledge, get up, get active and have fun in Purbeck."

An online map showing all the events can be views at purbeckpledge.org.uk, and paper copies of the map can be found around the district.

Schools and workplaces are also getting in on the action by pledging to walk a mile for the Purbeck Pledge on Wednesday 14 September - or a day that suits them if that's inconvenient.

Just tweet #Purbeckpledge16 to say what you’re doing.

There will also be some bargain activities at Purbeck Sports Centre's £1 taster morning on Saturday 17 September.

Attendees will be able to use the gym, have a swim, grab a racket or stretch in a pilates class, all for just £1. Booking is required.
