LENGTHY delays built up through the New Forest after an overturned caravan caused the complete closure of the westbound A31.

The road was re-opened shortly before 9pm last night. Hampshire Police thanked motorists for their patience during the closure, which lasted around seven hours.

They said no-one had been injured in the incident, which happened just before 2pm, but the debris caused by the crash at Stoney Cross was littered across the road.

Officers closed the westbound section of the dual carriageway all the way back to junction two of the M27 motorway, to allow traffic to be diverted before the Cadnam roundabout.

But drivers who were on the A31 when the accident happened were unable to move past the caravan for several hours.

The closure was necessary as a 'complex recovery was required' and there was a lot of debris to be cleared.

The road was initially expected to be closed until 5pm but only re-opened at around 9pm, although trapped traffic was able to move past the scene.
