Record crowds turned out for the finale of the Bournemouth Air Festival 2016.

Spectators packed the clifftops and the beaches on Sunday after days two and three were hampered by poor weather.

Total visitor numbers for the entire event have been estimated at 702,300.

This included record turnouts for the opening day and Sunday.

Bournemouth Borough Council tourism head Mark Smith hailed the 2016 air festival a huge success.

Mr Smith said: "The weather presented a particular challenge this year but the event still goes from strength to strength with records broken on both the Thursday and Sunday.

"We are grateful to the public for their patience, cooperation and keenness over the course of the weekend and we are proud to have closed Bournemouth’s ninth Air Festival with such an impressive programme of displays."

The festival brings £30million into Bournemouth every year, and the are some other impressive numbers involved.

For example, the public address system includes 3km of cabling, and more than 500 people are directly involved in putting on the show.

Mr Smith said: "We are already taking to the pilots about next year, which will be the festival's tenth anniversary.

"This festival has become part of the DNA of the town, it is something that attracts a truly international audience.

"It is also an important event that introduces younger people to Bournemouth, that is very, very important.

"It works both economically well for the town now, and is a great investment in the future."
