CANFORD Bottom roundabout has often appeared in the letters pages by those who claim it creates problems.

Last week I had the opportunity to use that roundabout for a week during rush hours and observed first-hand what is creating the complaints.

The layout of Canford Bottom roundabout works perfectly well, but one can’t blame that for delays during periods of heavy traffic.

The big problem I witnessed on numerous occasions was the selfish habit of inconsiderate drivers blocking or part-blocking box junctions when the lights change to red.

They bring traffic that should have had the right to proceed to a standstill and create unnecessary tail backs.

For the benefit of those inconsiderate drivers, I should mention that a box junction has criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road.

At a signalled roundabout, such as Canford Bottom, you must not enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

Clearly, a simple fact that many drivers have trouble to comprehend.

The only practical solution is to have fixed fine cameras over the box junctions.

They work in other parts of the country and the revenue raised could be used for the repainting of worn-out road markings that have virtually become erased on too many of our roads.
