FIRE crews battled a large heath fire at Canford Heath on Tuesday night.

The fire service said they received 36 calls to the blaze in Poole, the first coming in at 8.11pm.

Seven fire engines, two land rovers, a unimog and a water carrier were sent to the scene to tackle the flames, which covered an area of 150-metres by 40-metres.

It was extinguished using six hose reel jets, both land rovers and beaters. The spokesperson for the fire service said that crews were on the scene for a while to dampen down the fire.

Ringwood Road was closed between Alderney Roundabout and Mannings Heath Roundabout due to the heath fire.

They went on to say that a crew went back to the area at 11pm to check that the fire was completely out before returning back to the fire station.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said that they believe that the heath fire was started deliberately, but they cannot rule out that a cigarette may have been discarded carelessly, meaning that it started accidentally due to the fire being located close to the road.
