SHOPS containing a post office, hairdressers, charity shop and a former pharmacy could be transformed as part of a major redevelopment of Highcliffe's main shopping area.

The scheme to demolish the four units in Lymington Road, Highcliffe and rebuild them along with flats have been submitted to Christchurch Council in a bid to "breathe new life" into the site.

It could see another part of the high street redeveloped, following previous plans for a major scheme on the opposite side of the road.

A statement from applicants Hoburne, says the two schemes share similarities, although this is on a smaller scale.

As well as the replacement two shops, the proposal includes plans for 17 flats and houses - five two-bedroom flats, seven one-bedroom flats and five two-bedroom houses.

Rod Tucker, managing director of Hoburne said: "The plans for the opposite side of the street include the demolition of retail units and the construction of six shops, 23 flats and four houses on the opposite side of the road. This is still under consideration by council officers.

"There has been good interest in the redevelopment of 261 Lymington Road, with the leases coming for up for renewal opposite it seemed the right time to develop the rest of the high street in line with our strategy to grow development in the area.

"We are passionate about our local community and are also building three new houses on Wortley Road. We’re committed to playing a part in reviving the high street and supportive of the ‘Vision for Highcliffe’ campaign."

Hoburne's planning statement describes the scheme as "striking" and says it will "significantly improve the built form on site."

It adds: "Ultimately the proposed development will breathe new life into this site and is precisely what is needed in such a sustainable location as Highcliffe.

"Therefore, this is a clear opportunity to substantially improve upon an ageing building and under utilised site which can significantly improve its contribution to Lymington Road in terms of both commercial and residential qualities."
