TAILS were wagging as hundreds of dogs enjoyed a canine-themed festival at Upton Country Park on Saturday.

Organised by Dorset Dogs, the event featured a dog show ring, a ‘have a go’ agility course, and a number of stalls selling dog food, toys, and bric-a-brac. Various wildlife organisations and dog rescue charities also attended the festival.

The day kicked off with a ‘waggiest tail’ competition. Later in the afternoon, the canine contestants vied for a range of titles including ‘Best Rescue’, ‘Best Pup’, and the overall ‘Dorset Dog of the Year’.

Dorset Dogs Officer Suzanne Powner helped organise the free event. She said she was “very pleased” with the turnout.

“It’s been brilliant, and there’s been lots going on. We’ve done festivals other years, which have also gone really well.

"Last year we were here and it was such a popular venue.

"Lots of people asked if we could come here again so we were really pleased when the park said we could.

“Having a dog is so good for you. It’s really good for your health and happiness. Dorset Dogs works with the people who look after our countryside and our green spaces to make sure we’re welcome there with our dogs.

"The way we do that is by promoting responsible ownership – things like picking up after your dogs and knowing what to do around livestock.”

At midday, owners and their dogs were invited to join a guided walkies around the park. Youngsters were also encouraged to take part in a scavenger hunt against the clock.
