THE owner of cows which trampled a woman as she walked in Purbeck may be liable if the attack happened on public land.

As reported in the Daily Echo, the dog walker was airlifted to hospital on Monday after being injured on what is believed to be common land.

The woman was hurt as she walked through fields near Corfe Castle shortly before 5pm.

She suffered head and chest injuries and was flown to Southampton General Hospital.

A spokesperson from the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance said the casualty had been “crushed” by the herd.

Another walker who saw the victim being treated before being flown to hospital said she believed the woman had been walking her dog with her husband on public land before the incident.

A spokesperson from Dorset County Council said the owner or keeper of any animal is liable for the damage or injury caused by the animal when an attack happens in a public place.

Under the Countryside Code, landowners must not allow animals likely to attack visitors to roam freely where the public has access.
