CHRIS Holder's Australia could not curtail Sweden's rampant charge into the Speedway World Cup in Vastervik tonight.

The hosts cruised into Saturday's final with Great Britain, Poland and the winner of Friday's race off at Belle Vue by a margin of 11 points with consistent scoring proving key.

Poole Pirates ace Holder scored 11, one of which was an extra when his side played a joker, on a night that gradually slipped away from the Aussies.

After Freddie Lindgren's heat one exclusion for a tapes infringement, Australia led by two ahead of Holder's first run out in heat four, a gap he extended to three by just staying ahead of Peter Ljung.

Andreas Jonsson and Antonio Lindback closed the gap to one with the scores levelled in heat eight when Holder was ran wide on turn one by Lindgren. He gave chase but could not reel in his rival.

Jason Doyle briefly nudged Australia back in front but the tide began to turn with Holder's sluggish start proving costly in heat 12.

By the end of turn two, he had roared back to second behind Germany's Martin Smolinski before being overtaken by Jonsson.

With the Aussies five behind in heat 14, Doyle tried to lose to Jonsson on the line in a bid to gain a shot at double points in the next race.

But Jonsson was clued up and slowed down as well, wagging his finger in disgust at his rival as they headed back to the pits.

Sam Masters was then stone last in heat 15 as Sweden soared seven in front, leaving Holder to take the joker.

He led from the off but could not stifle the pace of Lindback on lap three with USA's Greg Hancock pinching second to all but end Australia's hopes of automatic qualification ahead of the four nomainted races.

Holder won a thrilling heat 17 after exchanging the lead with Lindgren on several occasions but dragging back a point was not enough and Sweden's safe passage was secured in the next outing.

Sweden finished on 48 with Australia (37) and USA (22) heading for the race off with Denmark and Russia. Germany (19) were eliminated.

Speaking to BT Sport after the meeting, Holder said: "We started really well but had a little low through the middle of the meeting, myself included.

"I was pretty average I thought but we got the points for the race off so it was not all bad.

"We are looking forward to Friday now, it is going to be a tough one but we will go there, do our best and see how we go."

On riding at Belle Vue, he added: "It looks good, I have seen it a couple of times. It looks wide open and fast and that suits our style."
