A CYCLIST was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a collision with a BMW convertible.

Police were called to the incident at 12.26pm on Thursday after a car and a cyclist collided at the roundabout in Bournemouth which connects Wimborne Road, East Avenue and Talbot Avenue.

It involved a male cyclist and a black BMW convertible registered to a man from Surrey.

The air ambulance was called and the cyclist was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.

According to a police spokesman he has a serious head injury.

Speaking at the scene acting sergeant Craig Tatton said: “The air ambulance was called and landed in Wallisdown Recreation Ground and the patient was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital.

“The road has been closed while we carry out an investigation of the scene because we believe the cyclist suffered quite a serious injury.”

Police closed a section of the roundabout for three hours while they dealt with the incident, which caused major traffic disruption in the area.

The section of Wimborne Road from St Luke’s Road to the roundabout.was also closed and traffic was stopped from entering the the A347 Wimborne Road towards the town centre.

As a result there were long queues of traffic along Talbot Avenue towards the roundabout and also along wImborne Road towards Winton as that was the only route open to motorists travelling in that direction.

All other routes were open and officers were on scene directing traffic.

The section of the roundabout was reopened just before 3.30pm.

Around half-a-dozen police vehicles were sent to the incident and specially trained officers were also spotted taking pictures of the scene.

South Western Ambulance Service were also called to the scene.

A spokesman said: “The cyclist had blood under his nose and an injury to his right eye.

“We sent two double-crewed ambulances and one rapid response vehicle to the scene.”
