PLANS for an independent airport parking service at Adventure Wonderland could be refused at a planning committee next week.

Officers at Christchurch council have recommended their members refuse permission for BOMO's meet and greet car parking service for Bournemouth Airport.

The scheme, which was deferred from the previous committee meeting, would see the company collect customers’ cars from the airport and take them to the theme park site, before meeting the passenger on their return with the vehicle.

But officer Kim Bowditch has said the plans represent an "intensification" of use and is therefore an "inappropriate development" within the Green Belt.

In her report to the committee she says the scheme would have an adverse impact on the Green Belt, as well as undermining the council's transport policy by increasing traffic movements on Parley Lane and reducing the incentive to use public transport.

The report also recommends that enforcement action is taken to stop the use of the site.

John Smith, managing director of BOMO said: “We're hoping members take a common sense approach.

"Their reason for recommending refusal is that it could be an intensification of the site use.

"But we're using what was already a car park.

"We have established a good clientele customer base of people that require accessible parking at the airport which there is a serious lack of, in our opinion."

Sixteen letters of support have been sent to the council, along with three letters of objection.

The report adds: "It would appear that a larger number of vehicles are currently being parked than are being applied for in this application."

Bournemouth Airport bosses have been critical of the plans, citing the lack of regulation companies that offer ‘meet and greet’ parking are subject to.

Speaking in March, a Bournemouth Airport spokesman said: “Cars are driven away from the airport and parked in areas with very few, if any, security measures.

“We received a lot of complaints last year about ‘off airport parking’ but, as these companies operate independently of the airport, unfortunately we have no way of helping those who have booked with them.”
