SOME of the world’s best polo players have descended on Sandbanks this weekend for one of the most glamorous events on the sporting calendar.

It is the ninth year the peninsula has played host to the British Beach Polo Championships, which has seen teams and enthusiasts travel from across the globe to attend.

Attracting around 3,000 visitors throughout Friday and Saturday, event director Johnny Wheeler said the extravaganza has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

“Those watching are always amazed by the sheer athleticism of the ponies and the horsemanship of the players,” he said.

“We are really grateful to have so many good supporters who keep coming back year after year, but also a lot of new faces who want to enjoy the day on Sandbanks beach watching polo with their friends or clients.

“It is the perfect setting, looking out over the scenes of Old Harry Rocks.

“It’s been another great year. As well as those coming to watch the polo, we have others visit because they want to dress up and enjoy a good party.”

A beach volleyball match between England and Poland also drew big crowds, as well as the always popular charity race between a pony and top-of-the-range sports car.

This year saw the pony get the better of a Porsche Cayenne to the delight of those watching.

All funds raised will go to John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

Following the final and prize-giving ceremony, a party featuring Radio 2 DJ Trevor Nelson will be held on the beach.
