THE future of Poole hosting European Maritime Day next year is due to be discussed following the BREXIT vote.

Dubbed as ‘one of the biggest international boosts to the town’s maritime industry and tourism in decades’, the annual event is due to come to the town on May 18 and 19, 2017.

It is held in a different town or city in Europe each year. However, this is now subject to further talks after the public voted to leave the European Union at polling stations on June 23rd.

Cllr Mohan Iyengar, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Economy, Culture and Leisure, Borough of Poole, said: “Following the decision of the Referendum for the UK to leave the European Union, there are many practical implications that are not yet clear.

“The council will hold discussions with officials of the UK Government and the European Commission at the earliest opportunity to clarify the status of European Maritime Day in May 2017 which Poole is due to host.

“For the many people who have indicated their interest in this event we shall confirm the situation as soon as possible.”
