AN animal-welfare charity has been forced to cancel a public fundraising event.

The Worldwide Veterinary Service was set to host Paws in the Park due to be held on July 24.

A lack of upfront funding has meant the charity has been forced to choose between the event - which was due to be held at the Shaftesbury Estate at Wimborne St Giles - and animal health.

A spokesperson said: "The impact that this has on WVS is that we have to limit expenditure over the next few months and Paws requires considerable up-front expenses to allow us to put this on. This has resulted in us having to cancel and whilst we really didn’t want to have to do that, we have to prioritise the animals that need our care.

"It was an incredibly tough decision but one that not been taken lightly and we are all disappointed that we have had to cancel what has always been such a positively-received event that drives vital awareness of what we do."
