STAFF and pupils at Burton Primary are celebrating after Ofsted inspectors rated the school as Good.

After visiting the Campbell Road school over two days, a team of inspectors praised "major improvements" in teaching and the achievement of pupils.

And they said pupils achieve standards above average, make rapid progress and feel safe and well cared for.

At its last inspection the school, which has 313 pupils between the ages of four and 11, was graded as Requires Improvement but this time it was upgraded to Good.

Lead inspector John Laver said: "Staff and governors fully support the head teacher in his rigorous and determined drive for continued improvement. Teaching has improved in quality.

"Pupils behave well and are very positive about wanting to learn. As well as liking lessons, pupils enjoy the good range of clubs, visits and other activities provided outside the classroom."

Burton Primary received a special award at the inaugural Daily Echo School Awards for the dedication and care shown to two young brothers after the death of their mother.

Following publication of the Ofsted report, Mr Buckland said: "We are all absolutely delighted at this wonderful outcome for everyone in the school community.

"It is recognition of our talented, hard working staff team, a team that is determined to maintain our journey of improvement to make Burton Church of England primary an excellent school.

"Children are now receiving an education that prepares them for the future within a caring and supportive environment as recently recognised by the Daily Echo."
