A SMALL business in Bournemouth has been rewarded for creating the best health app in the world.

3 Sided Cube had “set the standard for innovation and creativity on the internet”, according to judges in the Webby Awards.

The County Gates-based company collected the Best Health App title in the 20th Annual Webby Awards for designing the American Red Cross Blood Donor app.

It finds itself in the company of First Lady Michelle Obama, who was given a Webby for her appearance in Billy on the Street with Sesame Street’s Big Bird and in CollegeHumor’s Go To College music video.

David-Michel Davies, executive director of the Webby Awards, said: “3 Sided Cube’s American Red Cross Blood Donor App has set the standard for innovation and creativity on the internet. This award is a testament to the skill, ingenuity and vision of its creators.”

The award ceremony will be held in New York on May 16.

3 Sided Cube was approached in 2014 by the American Red Cross, which had identifies factors preventing potential donors from making and keeping appointments.

The Westbourne team visited a New Jersey clinic and developed an app which enables users to book an appointment and follow their blood donation through the system. It was downloaded 260,000 times in Android and 350,000 times on Apple devices and led to a 22.7 per cent increase in self-scheduled appointments.

Duncan Cook, managing director of 3 Sided Cube, said: “It is such a huge honour to have even been nominated for a Webby. Being able to say that we actually walked away as winners is quite literally a lifelong dream come true.

“It’s fairly unfathomable that a small digital agency based in a British seaside resort have found themselves receiving the same award recognition as Spotify, Google and YouTube.

“This win only spurs on to continue on our mission to produce tech for good.

“You don’t have to choose between good work and good people – receiving this Webby proves that charity apps done right are just as credible within the digital sector as any other form of technology.”

The Webbies, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, is judged by a panel of experts including Tumblr founder David Karp, musicians Questlvoe & Grimes, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, TV host Jimmy Krimmel and Steve Wilhite, creator of the .gif file.
