EDDIE Howe admits he is keen to protect Harry Arter’s long-term future as the midfielder continues to battle a persistent Achilles problem.

The Republic of Ireland international has managed just 45 minutes of football since sustaining the injury in the win over Southampton at the beginning of March.

There had been concerns Arter could miss the rest of the season, with the 26-year-old a doubt for tomorrow’s Premier League trip to Everton (3pm).

Howe says the former Woking man’s fitness is paramount with next season and Euro 2016 in mind.

The Cherries boss said: “Harry Arter has improved but his injury is a niggly one and we need to make sure we protect his long-term future.

“It’s been difficult for him because he’s the type of character that wants to play, as they all do, every week.

“He missed pre-season, the first part and the tail-end of the season and in between he did really well.

“We just hope that he’s fit beyond this season and of course this summer is a big one for him. We will wait and see what happens.”

Howe said he was still awaiting definitive feedback on full-back Adam Smith, who has seen various specialists over a groin problem.

Meanwhile, winger Max Gradel is doubtful with a calf injury.

Howe added: “Max is improving. We hope he will be OK but we will wait and see.”
