A CHARITY has launched its annual recruitment drive for lifeguards to keep a watch over Dorset's beaches.

The RNLI, along with local councils, will be providing cover at 21 beaches across the county, including Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, from April to the end of September to ensure that visitors stay safe at the seaside.

Last year, the lifesaving charity's lifeguards dealt with 1,268 incidents, ranging from slips, trips and stings to more serious water-based rescues affecting a total of 1,304 people.

Barry Heathfield, lifeguard manager for the RNLI, said: "This is a great opportunity for someone looking for exciting and rewarding work during the summer.

"Although it’s physically demanding work, all lifeguards receive significant training and support, which leaves them with fantastic skills for life in areas like first aid."

He said that the charity is keen to hear from anyone aged 16 and over who is interested in having the 'best summer job' on the beach instead of in an office.

"Don’t worry if you’re not already qualified, we will be running a training course, so come along and see if you have what it takes to be part of the RNLI’s lifeguarding team."

He went on to say that a key part of a lifeguard’s job is to spot dangers before they develop and 95-per-cent of the role is preventative work, offering friendly and helpful advice to people.

Barry says that applicants must be strong swimmers who are courageous, selfless, trustworthy and dependable. He said that in return the lifeguards will receive world-class training in search and rescue, competitive rates of pay, lifesaving and casualty care techniques, as well as boosting their CVs with invaluable skills.

Courses for those who do not already hold beach lifeguard qualifications will run between April 4 to 8 for which places can be booked by emailing Lara_bruce@rnli.org.uk
