THE traditional 'jam and Jerusalem' ideals of the WI are alive and kicking in Christchurch as 85 ladies celebrated five years of cakes, knitting and friendship.

St Catherine's Hill WI Christchurch was formed in February 2011 by grandmother Jo Dunn.

At the time Jo, who had moved to the town just a few years earlier from Berkshire, was looking for a way to make friends and fill her afternoons.

"I had been part of WI groups before and really enjoyed them so thought why not start my own," said Jo, 63.

"To be honest I was a bit apprehensive at the time as I wasn't sure if anyone would show up and I know there are a few other WI groups in the Christchurch area.

"But at the first meeting we had about 110 women show up and since then we have had a regular group of 85 ever since.

"Unfortunately I can't take any more ladies because of health and safety reasons but it's great to know there are plenty of women who want to take part."

For Jo she thinks the continued popularity of the WI as a whole - which celebrated its 100th birthday last year - is because it "gives ladies a purpose and a social world".

"Obviously it's not just cake baking and patchwork we also meet up for coffee and have a monthly lunch group," added Jo.

"Everyone needs friends and the WI is a great place to make them especially for ladies of a certain age."

On Tuesday, February 2, Jo and her 85 members gathered at St Catherine's Hill hall in Marlow Drive, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the group.

To mark the occasion there was a hat competition and Jo organised a vintage tea party for the ladies.

"It was great fun and hopefully we'll all still be here in five years' time to celebrate out 10th birthday together," added Jo.
