A SCOUT group who worked hard over the winter period to put up a new fence at their HQ have seen it torn out and stolen.

The thieves even left nails and screws sticking out dangerously and put passers-by at risk of falling in to the group’s fire pits.

Sandford Scout Group, which has 70 boys and girls aged six to 14, had got the fencing from the old Sandford Primary School, which is in line for redevelopment.

They had been told by a parish councillor that they could use the fencing to screen the front of the Scout hut from the public, so they could build some small fire pits and develop their scouting skills.

Brian Durfin, chairman of First Sandford Scout Group, said: “The boys, girls and leaders removed the panels from the old site and set to work installing the fencing over Christmas. It was hard, yet rewarding work and after two days it was installed and everyone felt a great sense of achievement.

“During drop off and pick-ups, all the parents were heard to express how proud they were that their son or daughter had worked so hard in helping install the fence.”

He said thieves cut away the fence panels between 5am and 12noon on Thursday, January 14.

“Not only did they steal something that wasn't theirs but they left the site with screws/nails sticking out dangerously and exposed the fire pits to the general public, which could have led to someone falling and hurting themselves,” he said.

“The effect on the children has been immense. You can imagine their sadness and disappointment at having their hard work torn down.”

He appealed for help in finding new fencing, to avoid having to rope the site off for safety.
