BURGLARS broke into a Swanage bakery through a skylight and stole a safe yesterday morning.

A member of the public alerted police after Haymans Bakery on Institute Road was broken into around 1.15am.

It is believed that two offenders were responsible for breaking into the bakery via its rear skylight.

A large safe was stolen containing a quantity of money, according to a Dorset Police spokesperson.

The offenders are believed to have escaped using the back door.

A dark coloured Ford Focus is suspected to have been used by them.

No arrests have been made.

Peter Hayman, owner of the bakery, said he was "very, very angry" about what had happened.

"My delivery driver discovered the break-in when he arrived around 5am. There was a trail of destruction. The skylight had been smashed, the kitchen door had been broken.

"The safe they stole had at least £2,300 in it," he added.

Dorset Police ask anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting crime number 9:31.
