DISTRICT planning chiefs have agreed proposals for a 64-bed care home at a former first school site in Sandford.

Members of Purbeck District Council's planning board have agreed developers can demolish the former St Martins First School, Sandford Road, and build the two-storey home.

St Martin's First School has been empty since the implementation of the Purbeck Review in 2013, a £36.5 million education shake-up that saw the district switch from a three to a two-tier school system.

The Grade II listed Church of St Martin, which is also situated on the former first school campus, is excluded from the proposals.

Some neighbours have voiced opposition to the plans.

Alan Jailler, of nearby Filleul Road, Sandford, said: "Whilst I am not in theory against the development proposal, I nevertheless have some serious concerns regarding the size and scale of the proposed building."

Meanwhile, Filleul Road residents Paul and Janice Bailey also registered their opposition with the district council.

They said: "The estate onto which it bounds is predominately that of bungalows, all of the properties which directly adjoin the proposed development are bungalows.

"This means that the elevation of the proposed two-storey building with pitched roof must be seen as being out of character with the surrounding properties."

A document prepared for committee by Purbeck District Council's planning department identified the operator of the new home as Mayflower Care Communities, which operate care homes for frail people in need of 24-hour care and support.

"In terms of the impact upon the local economy, the proposal will also provide employment for 60 full time equivalent employees," added the report.

In addition to the 64 resident bedrooms, the new care home will boast communal facilities including siting rooms, dining rooms, reception, cafe, hair/beauty salon, library and a cinema.
