IT was due to be the biggest event of the school calendar.

But pupils and teachers from Ringwood School are devastated after they have been forced to postpone their sell-out production of Starlight Express because gales wrecked the theatre.

More than 200 pupils had worked for months on the school’s most ambitious show yet and were ready to take to the stage for seven performances this week to a crowd of 1,800 people.

However on Sunday, teachers discovered the marquee that was specially set up for the rollerskating show had collapsed as Storm Imogen battered the south.

Contractors have now been forced to take down the huge structure which featured a stage, bar and tiered seating for more than 300 people due to safety fears.

Headteacher Chris Edwards said students were heartbroken when they were told the news at a meeting this morning.

“There were a lot of tears and upset.

“The timing couldn’t have been worse. Everything was ready to go and it looked absolutely amazing in there. The school has a reputation for putting on some extraordinary productions.

“It’s just devastating and heartbreaking. There is a very subdued atmosphere at school today.”

The school has today called on the community to rally together so they will still be able to host the production this summer, which for some students is vital for their final exams.

Ms Edwards, added: “We have to turn adversity into something positive. The show must go on – and it will.

“If anyone in the community can help us put It on in the summer, please get in touch.”
