Heavy rain and strong winds are heading for Dorset this weekend, the Met Office has warned.

Two yellow weather warnings have been issued; one for heavy rain on Saturday and another for strong winds on Monday.

Saturday's alert is valid from 6am until just 10pm.

Around 20 to 30mm of rainfall is expected with 50 to 70mm possible in some areas.

Gales are also expected with gusts of 40 to 50mph inland with 65mph winds over higher grounds and south-facing coasts.

Brownsea Island has tweeted it will be closed on Saturday due to the high winds with updates to follow on Sunday opening.

The rain and gales will clear during the evening but the Met Office is warning of a risk of localised flooding and with potential of disruption to travel.

A spokesperson said: "Southern and southwestern England and parts of south Wales are expected to see the heaviest and most persistent rain from this frontal zone with relatively warm, moist air being drawn up from the southwest on the strong southerly flow to generate some heavy rain over south-facing coasts and hills in particular.

"There may also be short periods of locally quite intense rainfall embedded within this relatively broad rainfall area."

Brittany Ferries has cancelled its 6.30pm sailing from Cherbourg to Poole due to the weather, and services on Sunday and Monday will be subject to cancellation and delays.

The second yellow weather warning for strong winds is valid from 6am until 3pm on Monday.

Gusts of 60-70 mph are possible in exposed coastal districts with further disruption to travel possible.
