PICTURESQUE Durdle Door has been nominated 'Landmark of the Year' in the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards.

Dorset residents are therefore being urged to vote for the world-famous rock arch of Durdle Door.

Situated on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage coastline, this geological wonder and one of the UK’s most impressive coastal features, was nominated by the landscape photographer Gareth Edwardes.

It is competing for the title against the other famous sites of the Seven Sisters in East Sussex, Old Man of Storr in Skye and Glastonbury Tor and Bamburgh Castle in Scotland.

James Weld, chairman of the Lulworth Estate and the Jurassic Coast Trust, said: “When you stand on the cliff top and gaze at the stunning, ancient arch rising out of the sea, you can see why millions of people have made the pilgrimage to Dorset to visit Durdle Door. Whether you visit at the height of summer or in the driving wind and rain, it is an awe-inspiring experience.

“Durdle Door captures the essence of the Jurassic Coast; the power of the elements and deep time. From families to photographers and walkers, nature-lovers to extreme sports enthusiasts, Durdle Door is a truly magical place which creates enduring memories – for people from all walks of life. We’re thrilled that Durdle Door has been nominated for this prestigious title – but need your support to win it.”

Voting closes on Sunday, January 31.
