A WINDSWEPT Santa Claus landed safely at Poole Quay cheered on by crowds of festive onlookers on Sunday.

Father Christmas arrived at a blustery Poole Quay via Poole RNLI's lifeboat, which was bedecked in tinsel and Christmas decorations.

Greeted by the deputy Mayor of Poole, Cllr Peter Adams, Father Christmas was swiftly escorted to the land train by two elves for a short trip up and down Poole Quay.

Entertainment was provided by Dorset Youth Marching Band, Zumba Snowmen and Bournemouth Carnival Band, in their eye-catching Spiderman costumes.

Pirates of Poole also turned out for the fun, ahead of their panto performance in Peter Pan at the Lighthouse.

And kind-hearted staff from Sainsbury's Poole, took the role as Santa's helpers, handing out sweets and other goodies to youngsters in the crowd.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Adams, said: "It's wonderful to see so many people here despite the weather.

"It's a lovely atmosphere."

Anne-Marie Clark, Poole RNLI spokesperson, said: "This is particularly poignant for us this year, because it is the last year we will do it with this boat, which we won't have next November.

Bournemouth Echo:

"It's been such a big part of our history here, not only for our crew, but for the town.

"We've been doing it for 20 years, and with this boat since 2001. We're just delighted to have been a part of it all."

This year's event is the last one to be run by Poole Tourism, with Borough of Poole hoping to encourage others to take on organising it next year.

The tourism team stepped in last year to save the parade, but due to funding cuts this is the last year they will be able to pay for it.

Bournemouth Echo:

Graham Richardson, manager of Poole Tourism, said: "We're really pleased with the turnout, especially considering the weather.

"The feedback has been very positive, and people were really pleased to see Father Christmas and have the children spend some time with him.

"If someone could take it on next year, that would be wonderful."
