Strong winds of up to 60mph could be set to sweep across Dorset this afternoon and tomorrow, the Met Office has warned.

A yellow 'be aware' alert has been issued for Bournemouth, Poole and the rest of the county from 7am until 8pm on Sunday, and then again from 9am on Monday.

Swanage is set to be the windiest, with gusts of 55mph, compared with 50mph gusts in Bournemouth and Poole.

The warning was updated on Saturday morning to say: "A blustery weekend is expected across England and Wales.

"Winds will continue to strengthen from the west on Saturday; gusts around coastlines exposed to the westerly or southwesterly winds could reach 60 mph in places, while inland gusts could touch around 50 mph locally.

"Southwesterly winds will increase later on Monday morning, with gales extending eastwards across Wales along with much of southern and central England, and severe gales likely on exposed western and southern coasts.

"Gusts of 50 mph are likely inland whilst gusts of 60 mph will affect some exposed coasts in the west and south. Winds will will gradually ease from the west on Monday afternoon."

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "A low pressure system is expected to move east to the north of Scotland on Saturday, leading to strengthening winds across the UK but particularly across England and Wales.

"Latest indications are that gust strengths will be somewhat lower than previously expected."
