Academic achievers, top apprentices, sports stars, artists, and performers were all honoured at a New Forest college’s annual awards ceremony.

Brockenhurst College celebrated the success of its students across a broad spectrum of subjects and courses and a number of memorial awards were also presented to those who excelled through hard work, dedication and commitment.

David Yates, chair of the college governors, said: “It was a privilege once again to join the staff and students of Brockenhurst College as they celebrate their tremendous achievements. We continue to strive for excellence in all we do here and these awards are confirmation of our continued success."

Ian Payne, who won the Junior Disability Sportsperson of the Year award at the 2015 Hampshire & Isle of Wight Sports Awards for his achievements on the tennis court, won the award of Student of the Year.

Ian won his first senior title in the German Open last year, and is now ranked third in the world in the junior division.

He also found time to earn A* for Further Maths, A* for Maths, and A in Physics for his A-levels.

Ian, who is now studying Engineering at Exeter University and appeared on screen via Skype at the awards, commented: “I've really enjoyed my time at Brock and feel very humbled by the award of Student of the Year. I thank everyone at Brock for all their support and will always be grateful of that and of the friendships I have found there. It has been a fantastic preparation for university.”

Many of the awards were sponsored businesses that work with the college to offer work placements, training opportunities or other aspects of students’ learning.

Among the sponsors represented on the night were McCarthy & Stone, Colten Care, Portal, Travis Perkins, Echo Pilot Marine Electronics, Professor David Roberts, Chewton Glen, Geo Specialty Chemicals, Doughty Engineering, Norco GRP Ltd, The Collective Group and PTF Engineering.
