MOTORISTS were caught in heavy delays on Thursday morning after a crash closed Hurn Road/Matchams Lane

The road is one of the main diversion routes during the A338 Spur Road work.

Traffic was particularly heavy on the A338 and A31, with the road closed at from the junction of Matchams Lane and Boundary Lane.

Police were called to the collision outside Avon Castle Drive just after 7.10am.

Initially it was reported no-one was injured but ambulance later attended to treat one of the drivers.

The collision caused a lot of debris and broken glass on the road.

A white Volkswagen Transporter van and a silver Hyundai coupé both suffered damage.

They had to be recovered from the scene.

Hyundai driver, Dan Noble, 23, who lives in the area, said: "I just came around the corner a bit quickly.

"I think it looks worse than it is. We literally just clipped each other. The main thing is everyone is fine. I climbed out of the car to make sure he was alright."

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said traffic was at a standstill at Ashley Heath, with queues back to Ringwood on the A31.

Motorists travelling on the A31 trying to get onto Matchams Lane were turned back to Ringwood.

The disruption comes just two days after two crashes and roadworks caused massive delays across the conurbation.

On Tuesday, thousands of people saw more than an hour added to their morning journey after collisions near Parley Cross and on the A350 in Poole exacerbated delays caused by work on the A338, A347 New Road and Wick Lane in Christchurch.

The road was reopened around 9.30am.
