SOME youngsters can't wait to bang on drums or play guitar, but these pupils are all about classical music.

Around 75 of the "most gifted and talented" students from The Grange School, St Katherine's Primary School and Christchurch Junior School gathered with their peers at Twynham School to take part in a celebration of everything Mozart, Myslive?ek and Mendelssohn.

With the increased interest in modern music, Kevin Cook, Twynham's director of music, said flutes, oboes and violins are being abandoned in favour of those frequently seen in pop and rock songs.

And what better way to help children re-find their love for traditional instruments than to invite members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for a very special jam session.

Six musicians from the BSO performed with the students and even pulled together compilations for them - conducted by Frank Zielhorst.

Mr Cook said: "I organised it after we got some funding for it from Dorset Music Services.

"The idea is to get students back into music. They had to be Grade 1 and they are the brightest musicians. They were the most gifted and talented students in their school.

"The reason we did this is because classical instruments are a dying breed in schools. Lots of children take up drums or guitars and we wanted to promote traditional classical music and that's why we got the BSO involved.

"We had one person in from each area: brass, strings, percussion and woodwind, and it was just a brilliant occasion. A special thanks to Frank Zielhorst for conducting."
