A CAMPAIGN is underway to help pay for the headstone of a baby boy who died weeks after his parents reported they were living in their car.

Claire Matthews, of Hope for Food, has started the petition to raise £3,000 for little Donald's funeral.

He was just two months old at the time of his death.

It is believed he died in Kent, where his parents are now living after they were unable to find a home in Dorset.

As previously reported, they were so desperate to find a home they ended up staying at a number of bed and breakfasts and even slept in their car.

Ms Matthews said: "It's so they can start rebuilding their lives.

"I don't want to feed them bits or give them money here and there. I don't want them to be let down again.

"That's why I'm saying let's get this money together and make a difference."

Speaking to the Daily Echo in the summer, Donald's mum Jane – not her real name – said of her son: "I love him to bits. I just want him to be safe."

She said she had been evicted from the room she was renting in a house in Verwood, but hadn't enough money for a deposit for a new home.

As she came from Kent, she said that local councils in Dorset had not helped her.

Jane left Kent because of an ex-partner and did not want to return.

In September, it was reported that Donald, who was born prematurely at Poole Hospital, had died.

The cause of his death is not yet known.

Claire, who said the family were "grief stricken", has already raised £400 for Donald's headstone.

She has asked for any cards of condolence – with or without a monetary donation – to be sent to Hope For Food, Flat 1, 11 Alyth Road, Bournemouth, BH3 7DF.
