A POOLE man with his home-made trike beat 22 weekly winners to scoop Poole Dream Machines' Bike of the Year award.

Keith Bastin's V9 Trike was constructed from old tools and junk welded together and caught the eye of fellow bikers and spectators who cast their votes for their favourite bike.

His unique creation had beer kegs for seats and a set of horns on the front. He won £300 cash courtesy of A Plan Insurance, the Midge Holloway Trophy, MOT from All2wheelers, bespoke hoodie from Bats Hogsty and framed photo from Snakes Pix.

“You see so many lovely bikes that come to Poole Quay, but I wanted to do something unique and really special," said Keith. "It took three to four months and was so much fun to build.

"Everywhere the bike goes people want to touch or sit on it and it really brings a smile to their faces. Next year I’m hoping to start a new project, something even more outrageous, so any donations of old spanners would be much appreciated.”

The final night on Poole Quay ended on a high with 1,300 bikes lined up for the closely fought finale of Dream Machines, organised by Poole Tourism and part of Wave 105 Summertime in the South.

Second place went to Richard Stephens from Poole with his beautifully restored BSA Super Rocket and third was the customised Kawasaki of Andy Hiscock, from Berkshire.

Bruce Grant-Braham, chairman of Poole Tourism Partnership, said: “This has been another great year for Poole Dream Machines which remains as popular as ever. Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who takes part in creating these fantastic displays and amazing line ups that draw thousands of visitors to the Quay. Our thanks especially go to the volunteer marshals who give their time for free and are such a key part of Dream Machines' continued success.”

Marshalls chose to support the new BikeSafe DocBike charity with the surplus income. A cheque for £2,000 was presented to intensive care doctor Ian Mew for the initiative which delivers emergency first aid tips and training for riders who may come across an injured biker, works with bikers to promote safer riding and provides direct roadside critical care.

Poole Dream Machines will return on the first Tuesday in April 2016.
