A MAN has been arrested after a cyclist suffered serious injuries in an alleged hit and run at the weekend.

Police are continuing to call for witnesses for come forward following a collision in Julians Road near Wimborne at 10.50pm on Saturday.

A car and a pedal bike were involved in a crash.

The cyclist, a man in his 50s, was cycling away from Wimborne toward the Corfe Mullen roundabout when he was struck from behind by a vehicle and knocked to the ground.

It was reported that the vehicle, thought to be a dark-coloured Volkswagen Polo from debris found at the scene, did not stop after the collision.

The cyclist sustained serious injuries including eight broken ribs, a fracture to his back, a broken ankle and is currently in intensive care at Poole Hospital.

Police Constable Dave Cotterill, of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit, said: “This is a very serious incident and I am appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who was in the area and saw a dark coloured Polo at the relevant time, to contact me on 101.”

A 28-year-old local man has been arrested in relation to this incident and released on police bail, pending further enquiries, until the beginning of October 2015.
