FIREFIGHTERS were called to a "chemical spillage" in Poole which turned out to be harmless.

The spillage occurred near St Mary's RC Church in Wimborne Road at around 4.30pm today, and two fire engines from Poole were called to the scene by police officers.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said specialist officers from Gillingham were due to attend the scene to identify and dispose of the chemical.

A cordon was put in place to keep members of the public away from the scene.

Initial reports stated that there was a yellow substance which had spilt and was bubbling and eating away at the tarmac.

However the substance was not deemed hazardous or harmful and the liquid was washed away with water.
