The number of spectators surrounding the Hoburne Ring rise sharply as the soldiers prepared to stage the first of six performances at the three-day spectacular.

Many of the riders were wearing silver breastplates over scarlet tunics as their mounts thundered into view.

They wowed the crowd by staging a series of cavalry drill movements set to music in a dazzling display of equine excellence that showed what battles were like when conflicts were fought on horseback.

The first of their two performances yesterday was briefly halted after one of the horse and rider combinations came to grief.

But spectators gave the soldier a round of applause as he got to his feet and remounted.

Show-goers also gave the horsemen a standing ovation as they left the ring at the end of the 15-minute display.

The commentator spoke for many when he said: "It makes you proud to be British. The finest in the world."

The presence of the Household Cavalry, coupled with perfect show weather, resulted in a huge crowd at New Park, Brockenhurst.

Show secretary Denis Dooley said: "The show is really important to the Forest. It brings people together and shows off the best in Hampshire."

A large number of organisations showcasing country pursuits and the area's contribution to Britain's rural economy are taking part in the Daily Echo backed event, which continues today.
