TODAY'S Swanage Carnival parade has been delayed by an hour due to heavy rain.

The carnival procession, which was set to start at 3pm, has a superheroes theme, so expect some colourful costumes and crime-busting floats.

Carnival secretary Linda Welsh said: "The procession has been put back until 4pm.

"This is to give everyone an extra hour to prepare.

"It is getting a little bit brighter already and we are expecting the weather to improve this afternoon."

Another event scheduled for today, the Muscliff Fun Day in Muscliff Park, has been cancelled due to the weather and will now be held on Sunday, August 30.

The eight-day Swanage Carnival week includes displays of dance, live bands playing the main stage in the carnival marquee, fireworks displays, art competitions, a talent show, a treasure hunt, a dog show, water and land sports and parachute jumps.

Festival favourites The Red Arrows were unable to attend this year, but the Aerostars acrobatic air display team promises to thrill the crowds over Swanage Bay.

Another popular feature is the Masquerade Magic Night, which takes place in Lower High Street on Thursday evening.

The streets will be filled with revellers in fancy dress, with prizes in every bar for the best outfit.

Last year visitors to the event donated £20,000 to charity.
