THOUSANDS of people are set to descend on Swanage this weekend for the start of the town's popular regatta and carnival week.

This annual event, which provides a massive boost to the local tourist economy, regularly attracts around a quarter-of-a-million people to Purbeck, organisers say.

This year the acclaimed eight-day festival, one of the biggest on the south coast, includes its usual wide range of attractions.

An event spokesman explained: "These include a colourful two-mile carnival procession, dance, live bands playing the main stage in the carnival marquee and three amazing fireworks displays."

The first of these fireworks displays is scheduled for 9.45pm on Saturday's opening night.

This year the carnival procession - set for 3pm on Sunday - has a superheroes theme, so expect some colourful costumes and crime-busting floats.

"There will also be art competitions for both children and adults, a talent show, a treasure hunt, a dog show, water and land sports and parachute jumps."

Festival favourites The Red Arrows were unable to attend this year, but the Aerostars acrobatic air display team promises to thrill the crowds over Swanage Bay, say organisers.

Another popular feature is the Masquerade Magic Night, which takes place in Lower High Street on Thursday evening.

The streets will be filled with revellers in fancy dress, with prizes in every bar for the best outfit.

Last year the event donated £20,000 to good causes, both locally and nationally, and event organisers hope to eclipse that total with help from sponsors and donations from those attending.

The regatta and carnival runs from this Saturday until next Saturday.
