A MAN who raped an intoxicated woman as she vomited has been jailed for a total of seven years.

Saeed Robleh "targeted" his victim, who is in her 20s, at the Travelodge in Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, while she was drunk and on drugs.

The defendant denied one count of assault by penetration and one of rape, but was found guilty of both charges following a trial at Bournemouth Crown Court earlier this year.

Jurors convicted the 34-year-old after hearing that his victim - a guest at the hotel - had been vomiting into the toilet in an en suite bathroom when she was raped by the defendant, who had also taken cocaine during the night.

Police issued an appeal for information after the rape, and Detective Constable Katy Dennis of Bournemouth CID said the victim had been left "very shaken and frightened".

A CCTV image of Robleh was also released in a bid to track him down.

And in mid-March 2014, detectives arrested the defendant, who was then formally charged.

Mitigating for Robleh, Jon Mitchell called the rape "entirely opportunistic".

"[He was] taking advantage of the young woman while she was inconvenienced over a lavatory and as a result there was no violence beyond, of course, the violence of the sexual act itself," he said.

"He has reached 34 and this is the first sexual offence [that he has been charged with]. He is no stranger to criminality - his life revolves around drugs and the majority of his [previous] convictions are for drugs -but this is the first sexual offence in 24 years."

The court heard part of the victim's impact statement, in which she said she had been left 'traumatised', adding: "At times I have resorted to drinking and taking drugs to block out the memories."

Mr Mitchell argued that this behaviour was "simply [a] repeated activity" as the victim was "already engaged" in taking drugs.

However, Judge Peter Johnson said the rape had affected the victim greatly, adding: "You have caused her serious harm and the effect of that will continue to affect her for many years to come."

The judge said the woman had not wished to be alone with Robleh in the hotel room before the rape.

"Others were just outside the door when you raped her," he said.

"When you were challenged [by another], you pretended nothing had happened."

Judge Johnson said a pre-sentence report prepared by the Probation Service had revealed the defendant's "worrying attitude towards women".

"In my view, it seems there was an element of an entitlement on your part," he said.

Robleh, of Octavia Way in Staines, is already serving a 54-month jail term for possession with intent to supply 34.5g of crack cocaine.

The defendant was found to be in possession of around £3,500-worth of the class A drug in Staines on May 5 2014, and was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on March 18 of this year, ahead of his trial in Bournemouth.

He was sentenced to seven years for rape and five years for assault by penetration, to run concurrently, totalling seven years.

However, the new sentence will be served consecutively with the sentence he is currently serving, meaning he has received a jail term of 11 and a half years.
