TWO RAF Typhoons landed at Bournemouth Airport earlier ahead of a display at Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The Typhoon Display team arrived at 11.45am on Friday morning and were stationed at the airport until 3.07pm when they left for a display at Goodwood Festival of Speed at 3.30pm.

It was led by Flight Lieutenant Jonny Dowen, the 2015 Typhoon Display pilot.

One jet was the Typhoon display aircraft and the second was a back up aircraft, both of which are based at RAF Coningsby, confirmed a RAF spokesperson.

They added that the Battle of Britain-themed Typhoon, launched last month, is decorated in a camouflage-style design to mark the 75 anniversary and to acknowledge the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought and the aircrew who took part in the battle.

It is also painted with the 249 Squadron identification number of the only Fighter Command pilot, Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson VC DFC, awarded a Victoria Cross during the battle, which was given while flying from Boscombe Down on August 16, 1940.

The spokesperson went on to that the Battle of Britain-themed Typhoon jet is usually flown as part of a synchronised display with a Spitfire, but was being used for the solo display this weekend.
