THE broadcasting watchdog has said it will not investigate a Sky News interview with the boss of Poole’s Merlin Entertainments after the Alton Towers rollercoaster accident.

Ofcom received 1,816 complaints about the way presenter Kay Burley questioned Merlin chief executive Nick Varney.

The crash at the Staffordshire theme park on June 2 left four people seriously injured.

The complaints included claims that Ms Burley was too aggressive about safety at the park and the extent of the injuries suffered.

An Ofcom spokesman said: "We received a number of complaints about Kay Burley's questioning style during an interview about an accident at Alton Towers. We have carefully assessed whether this interview exceeded generally accepted standards.

"In our view, the interviewee was able to respond fully to the questions and put his position across. As a result, we have not taken the matter forward for investigation."

Leah Washington, 17, was among the most seriously injured. She had her left leg amputated above the knee and suffered a fractured hand in the incident when two carriages collided on the Smiler rollercoaster.
