ONE banger, three days, four countries – that’s the aim of three men who are taking part in a European rally to raise money for charity.

Matt Fleming-Duffy, 43, from Ferndown, and teammates Dave Duffy and Adam Duckenfield are doing the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally this month. They hope to raise £1,500 for Julia’s House.

The adventure will see the trio complete daily challenges during a three-day crusade from Belgium to Monte Carlo. There will be other rally drivers taking part; however the event is not a race.

Instead, organisers encourage rally drivers to put more effort into donning themselves and their car in fancy dress. Matthew and his team will be sporting Spiderman suits, with their old banger in a similar guise.

“I’m an ex-Bournemouth School pupil so I arranged with the art department to run a competition with the 12 to 13-year-olds to come up with a design for the car,” Matthew explained.

“We had dozens of designs from the schoolkids, they were really quite good. Julia’s House then said Spiderman was the way to go theme-wise.

“We bought this 20-year-old Volvo for £85 and dropped it off at the school one weekend and the boys painted it. We’re really chuffed with the result.”

He added: “I’ve got a great ‘dad bod’ going on now, so I’m loosely the build of Spiderman if he was real.”

In 2014, over 150 cars and 500 people successfully completed the challenge and raised over £100,000 for UK charities.

Matthew, although eager for the adventure, said he was “nervous” about navigating the route’s twists and turns.

“I get really bad vertigo and we’re driving through the Alps, so I’m quite nervous about that. It’s more of the fact it’s an old car and some of these roads are just rubbish – really rough, dangerous roads that just drop off the side,” he said.

“Apart from that, it will be great fun for us.”

He continued: “But there’s a really serious side to all of this, as well.

"Julia’s House are raising funds to open their hospice in Wiltshire but they still need £3.5 million for it.

“So, we’re doing whatever we can to keep awareness as the kids can’t get enough help.”
