DELIGHTED residents have welcomed the news that a derelict pub in Southbourne is to be given a new lease of life.

The Malt and Hops in Parkwood Road was a hugely popular pub and its sudden closure in 2008 left many residents disappointed and mourning the loss of their local.

It has been boarded up ever since and its condition has deteriorated over the years. But it has now been taken on by Brewhouse and Kitchen and is set to reopen in September or October this year.

Brewhouse and Kitchen was set up by Simon Bunn and Kris Gumbrell who have premises in Poole, Dorchester and across the south of England.

They intend to spend a seven-figure sum on the Malt and Hops, turning it into a microbrewery, pub and restaurant with over 250 covers.

Kris, a Bournemouth resident, said they had been overwhelmed by the level of interest and support from residents. "We like the site, we like the space and we think Southbourne is a fantastic up and coming area," he said.

"It's just been sat there and I'm a bit of an old softie, I can't stand it when there's a fantastic old building not being looked after.

"It's taken us nine months to unravel the ownership of the building and do the deal but we acquired the freehold last Friday and now we're just so excited about it."

An extensive survey has been carried out on the Southbourne property, which has revealed problems with wet rot, dry rot, missing lead on the roof and collapsed ceilings.

But Kris said: "We like our pubs a bit rundown and not in very good shape. We just can't wait to get started."

West Southbourne councillor Chris Mayne said: "It's just fantastic news that Brewhouse and Kitchen are re-opening the Malt and Hops.

"It's been an eyesore for so long and now it will be another great asset for Southbourne.

"I think it will be really good for the area and bring new people into Southbourne."

And Carlie O'Neill, vice chair of the Southbourne on Sea Business Association, said: "Southbourne is excited to see another new independent business open on our thriving high street and we look forward to welcoming the Brewhouse and Kitchen.

"The owners have our unfounded support and best wishes and we look forward to sampling an ale or two."
