AS a famous racing commentator once said, Bournemouth Wheels Festival is Go, Go, Go.

Three days of petrol and human-powered excitement start today as the second event gets under way.

Between this morning and Sunday afternoon the seaside resort will be heaven for those that like wheels-themed thrills and spills.

Among the new attractions this year will be quad bike rider the Kangaroo Kid – who will leap over monster trucks on the beach – and stunt driver Paul Swift, who, on Saturday evening, will be attempting to drive along the East Overcliff on two wheels.

And this year the festival will head out to the suburbs, with Southbourne hosting a fringe event on Saturday.

There will be attractions to head for from 10am, when classic cars will be on show on the East Undercliff and at the Pavilion.

At the BIC supercars will be on show from midday.

Monster truck shows take place from 12.30pm on the beach between the piers, while Pier Approach and the gardens will see bicycles, wheelchair sports, BMX, skateboarders and rollerbladers showing off their skills.

Near to Bournemouth Pier will be stunt motorbike shows throughout the afternoon and early evening and more classic cars on display.

For the real petrol heads, the East Overcliff will be the place to be.

A stretch of the road will be closed off to normal traffic to allow an array of priceless Formula One and Le Mans cars, alongside other classic racers and modern supercars, to show what they can do.

If last year is anything to go by, the drivers won’t be holding back as they open the revs along the course.

And this year there is a new pop-up arena near the demonstration straight as well.

There will be more family fun this evening, as the night glow bike ride takes place.

It leaves from outside the Miramar Hotel at East Overcliff Drive at 9.30pm, with participants asked to arrive at 9.15pm. Those taking part are being asked to decorate their bikes and themselves in bright colours as they head to Monkey Island and back.

Mark Smith, director of tourism at Bournemouth Borough Council, said: “Following the success of last year’s festival, Wheels 2015 is set to be bigger and better, with so much on offer that it’ll take more than a day to see it all.

“We’ve received such fantastic support from local residents and businesses – we really hope that everyone can get out and experience at least one of the three days of adrenaline-fuelled action.

“With mind-blowing stunts and internationally renowned performers, Bournemouth Wheels Festival is a completely unique family event and is the biggest of its kind in the UK.”
