TRAIN lovers thrilled to a host of classic diesel locomotives in Swanage this weekend.

Following the success of the Swanage Railway Spring Steam Gala last month, the town's 10th annual Diesel Gala and parallel Dorset Beer Festival got started on Friday and ran into today, drawing in big crowds.

For many the highlight of the weekend was a chance to see the Class 35 'Hymek' No. D7076 - the first time the 1963 locomotive has hauled trains at Swanage.

Other attractions included the Beerex and Wessex Belle Bistro Dining Trains on Friday and Saturday nights, and the launch of new beer 'Swanage Pride' at the Dorset Beer Festival, hosted by Corfe Castle Station.

"It has gone very well this year," said Swanage Railway chairman Peter Sills.

"We have a very loyal following of visitors who come year on year, and every time we get a few more people, who come from all around the country.

"This is one of the premiere events of its type and has been running for many years, and it is very well respected.

"The diesel engines are quite a niche interest, but there is plenty here to cater to any visitor, particularly the beer festival."

As well as riding the trains and supping pints of 'Old Pusher' and 'Regulator' at the festival, visitors to the gala could enjoy the delights of the award-winning Purbeck Mineral and Mining Museum, and buffet food at Norden and Swanage stations.

Thursday saw the naming of a Class 66 locomotive from GB Railfreight as the 'Swanage Railway' by Wave 105 DJ Mark Collins.

A three-train service, including the newly dubbed 'Swanage Railway' alongside such locomotives as the Class 45 No. 45060 Sherwood Forrester and Class 50 No. 50035 Ark Royal, operated between Norden and Swanage.

Swanage Railway is hosting a number of other popular annual events this year, including the Transport Rally on September 4-6 and the Autumn Steam Gala on October 16-18.
