PASSENGERS were in super safe hands when Hollywood actor Henry Cavill took the helm during a ferry crossing from Poole.

The 31-year-old British actor, who soared to fame after starring in the Superman movie Man of Steel, set off for his Jersey home on Condor’s new state-of-the-art Liberation ferry on Wednesday.

During the four-and-a-half hour crossing the super hunk, who was born and brought up in Jersey, was invited to take the wheel and posed for pictures with fans.

It’s understood Captain Cavill was returning to the Channel Islands for the annual rugby tournament - the Siam Cup.

The Hollywood star, known for his super striking blue eyes, will be representing the Durrell Conservation Trust, a global conservation charity, at the event.

A spokesman from Condor Ferries said: “Henry is a special guest at the Jersey Rugby Club’s Ipes Siam Club clash with Guernsey on Saturday.

“He is an ambassador for Durrell, which is holding a fundraising day to coincide with the Siam Cup.”

News of the celebrity’s trip spread fast on the social media site Twitter.

Condor Ferries tweeted: “Is it a bird? Is it a Plane? No! It’s Henry Cavill steering #Liberation on her way to #Jersey today! #Goodtimes”

And Gary Burgess said: “Have you met @Condor_Ferries' new captain? Henry Cavill is sailing the Liberation to Jersey today.”

The star, who has also played supporting roles in the TV series The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, Midsomer Murders and The Tudors, was spotted in West Dorset earlier this week.

During his visit he stopped off for lunch at the Harbour Inn in Lyme Regis.

Senior bar supervisor Julie Tween said: "When I was serving him I did a double take and I was just like, 'oh my god, it's Superman'.

"I said 'oh, it is you', and I asked if he would mind having a picture because I love the movie.

"He said 'not at all, go and get your phone'. He was very chilled out and has amazing blue eyes."
