A TEAM of rowers from Bournemouth are calling for the public’s support as they prepare to row thousands of miles around the UK for charity - and attempt to set a world record.

The four men are all set to quit their jobs to take part in an epic expedition that will see them row the 4,000 kilometres over three months.

The team, which includes teachers, a writer and a beach ranger, aim to raise £100,000 for their chosen charities, the Wessex Cancer Trust and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund.

On Saturday, May 2, the core team of four, who will be joined by three auxiliary rowers, will depart from Boscombe Pier as they begin their attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the oldest Australian Surf Boat to be rowed around Britain.

Steen Stones, ex Royal Marine Commando and crew member, said: “We are seeking help to raise the funds for the challenge.

“This will enable us to begin the epic journey and more importantly raise the £100,000 pounds to go to our very worthy charities."

The 30-year-old added: “We just can’t wait to get on the water now. So much planning has gone into it and it’s only just really starting to sink that it’s actually happening.”

The challenge will be the first ever attempt to row UK waters in a converted open water surf boat.

Propelled by four 15ft oars, the surf boat is an old Australian rescue craft that has been adapted to be used for this high-adrenaline sport.

Ellis Hagger, expedition leader, said: “By tackling the UK waters we will be encountering the most dangerous and fast-turning tides on the planet whilst crossing the world’s busiest shipping lane.

“On a daily basis we could be dodging cruise ships, pleasure craft and cargo ships so the trip will be pretty hairy in places but it will be worth it to raise the money for our selected charities which are both close to the crew’s hearts”.

The team , which also includes Mark Green, Sean Leddy, Gary Cure, Simon White and Mark Vidler, have already raised £18,000 towards the cost of funding the trip and are now on a final push to raise a further £7,000.
