THE POPULAR Loungers chain, which runs cafe bars in Christchurch, Winton, Westbourne and Southbourne, is now looking to open a restaurant in Bournemouth town centre.

The floors above the empty River Island shop in the heart of Christchurch Road could be converted into a Cosy Club restaurant.

There are currently Cosy Club restaurants across the south west but this would be a first Dorset venue for the brand, and an addition to the area’s Circo, Conto, Ludo and Arcado Lounges.

Marketing agents have been looking for a new occupier for the historic building for the past 18 months but the size of it – it is arranged over five levels – has deterred many businesses.

It is proposed that the ground floor will continue to be used as a shop, expected to be Holland and Barrett, while Loungers will convert the first, second and third floors into a restaurant. An outdoor terrace on the third floor is also planned.

The planning applications submitted by Loungers states: “The Cosy Club concept was developed by Loungers Limited to fit in to central town locations. The concept has separate bar and dining area, offers table service to diners and allows customers to make reservations. The Lounge ethos of ‘value for money’ still prevails.”

Planning policy states that units above shops can be converted to residential, office or community space, provided the proposal would not adversely affect the viability of the premises it relates to.

Loungers Limited said a Cosy Club restaurant could be seen to fit into the community use category, as it was designed to be an informal and neighbourhood-led restaurant open all day every day where people could meet up. “There are also a variety of board games available together with daily newspapers to read and a free neighbourhood book swap facility. Therefore the proposed use would represent a more modern day community use.”

Town centre ward councillor David Smith said: “On the face of it, I would welcome the introduction of this type of restaurant as it would provide a bit more variety in the town centre.

“Anything that will help the early evening economy and bring people into town is a good thing and I’m sure this restaurant would do very well at this location.”
