THREE months of electric cable installation work will begin next month, bringing disruption for residents in several areas of Bournemouth.

The extensive work, carried out by JSM Construction on behalf of Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution, is to construct a cable route from Victoria Park to Redhill sub-station off Whitelegg Way.

The work will be carried out in phases but will require road closures across the Redhill and Victoria Park. A lot of these are close to Moordown St John’s School and Hill View Primary School, which could prove problematic for parents and pupils.

Cllr Sue Levell, Independent councillor for Redhill and Nourthbourne, questioned why the work couldn’t have been carried out during the school holidays.

She said: “While the work is necessary as we all need electricity, it would have less of an impact if the work was carried out during the summer break, when the traffic is reduced.”

The work will start on April 7 and end on June 6. The following roads will be closed:

  • Headswell Avenue from Wimborne Road to Redhill Drive, between April 7 and May 8.
  • Redhill Drive from Headswell Avenue to Redhill Avenue, between April 7 and May 25.
  • Namu Road (west) from Boundary Road to Mansfield Road, between April 7 and May 14.
  • Oates Road between April 8 and April 20.
  • Highfield Road from Vicarage Road to Ensbury Park Road, between April 8 and April 20.
  • Wimborne Road from Headswell Avenue to Saxonhurst Road, between May 9 and June 1.
  • Namu Road (east) from Mansfield Road to Victoria Park Road, between May 15 and June 6.

Jonathan Ebel, lead design manager at Southern Electric Power Distribution, said: “We are investing over £3million to upgrade the electricity network between Redhill and Victoria Park substations.

"We apologise for any inconvenience or disruption this essential work might cause.”

A letter sent to residents by JSM Construction states: “As with any infrastructure project, there will be some local disruption while we carry out this work and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Work will be carried out between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday and between 9am and 6pm on Sundays
