FED-up residents are campaigning for the closure of an unauthorised car wash business that they say is making their lives a misery.

The hand car wash on Wimborne Road, Moordown, has been operating without planning permission for some time, despite the council’s attempts to take enforcement action, and has sparked complaints about noise, pollution and traffic problems.

However, its owners say the car wash is popular and point out that a planning application submitted last year, and subsequently withdrawn, was accompanied by a petition of support signed by more than 200 people.

A new application has now been submitted to Bournemouth council and is due to be considered shortly.

Cllr Beverley Dunlop, above, who represents Moordown, said the car wash was an ‘eyesore and a nuisance’ and she and her two fellow councillors were hoping to see the application rejected.

“We fully support local business, but those businesses must respect nearby residents and try to make a positive contribution to the area,” she said.

“This business has operated illegally for some time, ignored council enforcement notices and given scant regard to the well-being of local residents.”

The application has sparked several letters of objection.

One, from a Hillcrest Road resident, said: “This is yet another planning application for the already illegal car wash, which is still causing problems for residents too close to it.

“The noise is too loud, it can be heard all around my house with the windows closed.”

James Cain, of JN Planning Consultants, who is representing the applicant, said: “There has always been the display and maintenance of motor vehicles on this site going back to the 1950s. The planning officer has accepted in principle that a car wash use is okay.

“This is a well-used car wash providing economic benefits to the town, and the owner has already reacted to residents’ concerns by ensuring noise levels are acceptable. If the application is successful the owner will be committed to upgrading the site as per the plans.”
