POOLE Lifting Bridge has re-opened to traffic again after a second breakdown.

The bridge had re-opened to traffic after engineers worked to rectify a problem with the lifting mechanism this morning.

Both approaches to the bridge were cordoned off while a number of test lifts took place this morning to ensure it can operate normally.

Cyclists and pedestrians were still able to use the bridge, but it was closed to vehicles and boating traffic was also affected.

The bridge reopened at about 1pm but a problem with the 1.30pm lift means it is closed again.

It was re-opened at 3.30pm following a successful lift.

A Borough of Poole spokesman said earlier: “Poole Lifting Bridge has developed a problem and is currently closed to traffic. Cyclists and pedestrians are still able to use the bridge and the neighbouring Twin Sails Bridge is open to all traffic as usual.

“We are working to fix the problem and the bridge will be reopened as soon as possible.”
